January Newsletter
January can be a tough month to get back into the swing of things after Christmas, but it’s been a great start to the year for us all at CB Neuro Fitness. Both clients and staff have been up to some fantastic things.
Spasticity training
This month, our team was fortunate to have Karen Howarth, a specialist Neurological Physiotherapist, visit us to deliver some training on Spasticity Management. This included what it is, signs, symptoms, causes, and treatment such as the use of Botulinum Toxin injections (Botox).
Spasticity is very common in people who have an ABI, stroke, spinal cord injury or CP. Therefore is is important that our team is educated in how it affects the body and how it can be managed in order to ensure our clients always remain safe in the gym and enables us to create a successful programme that caters to their needs.
In addition, as we see our clients more often than other members of MDT’s, it will allow us to highlight any concerns, and what may be causing worsening symptoms, or how treatment is going in order to manage spasticity.
It was very interesting to gain more knowledge on this subject, and we all feel it has benefited us greatly.
New Year, New Goals
The new year often creates a sense of renewal, prompting people to reflect back on their year and what they have achieved. With this often comes the idea to set new goals. Here are some of our client’s new goals:
Having achieved his fitness goal last year, Kyle has set himself a new goal in the gym of pushing 200kg on the sled and is already working hard towards achieving this.
Another client, Sam, has decided he would like to improve his aerobic capacity and therefore undertook a bleep test! Sam managed to get to level 4.2 on his first attempt, and will be doing this again in April to see how he is progressing.
Other clients have expressed different goals, with some stating weight loss, strength goals, as well as a sponsored walk for charity which we are looking at organising in the future.
Hyrox
Last month one of our Personal trainers, Chris Coupe, competed in his first solo Hyrox event in Manchester. Chris has unfortunately been struggling with a calf injury since last year, which has affected his training. However, despite this, he still managed to complete his race in a fantastic time of 1 hour and 43 minutes, demonstrating his incredible drive, determination and hard work.
Well done Chris, we are incredibly proud of what you have achieved.

Coming up
This month the team will be having training on back pain causes, examination and treatment from Angela Dainton, an MSK Physiotherapist and Director of Atherton Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic.
We have also had some recent enquiries about our ABI gym group, so we may see some new members join us soon. It will be great to welcome some new faces to the group.
